A visit to arlington elementary

At 40 years old, Arlington Elementary is the youngest elementary school in the Fort Wayne Community School district.  It was designed when the “open concept” was in full swing.  But the old design combined with today’s concepts of team teaching, individual work areas, and group projects blend nicely for creating a wonderful learning environment for Arlington’s children.  While the school is young, the history is rich, as the murals prove.  One in particular was dedicated to Arden Atherton who worked as a media specialist with the school for 34 years.  The blend of “seasoned pros” to young, new teachers lends a nice offering of different approaches to teaching.  The  detailed bulletin boards incorporated the current interests of students to engage them and keep their attention  My favorite was the “Readbox” above the  book shelf…”Free book rentals” for  those who wished to enjoy exploring a new adventure at no cost.  The diversity among the students is always a plus to me…from the functional skills classrooms to the English Language Learners.  Children in this building are experiencing the “real” world by getting to know others who may not be exactly like they are.   To me, that’s what makes this building, and all of FWCS, so special.

I am always amazed when I visit our schools.  To think that people actually believe our schools are “failing.”  What I see are focused students, excited and wanting to learn.  What I see are committed teachers who love their jobs because every day they work miracles.  I am proud to be part of a great district.

I enjoyed it - visiting our schools is the best part about being on the Board. As a former educator, it gives me just what I need when I miss being in the classroom.

Being an advocate means speaking out for what you believe in.  Sometimes that means stepping outside of one's comfort zone to show support for what you feel is right.  These are some of the letters I have sent to various legislators and newspapers to show my position on public education.
